Ten years on from a change in the Australian law, thousands of people have been deported back to their country of birth, New Zealand. What has happened to them? How do you reintegrate into a society you left, probabaly as a child. With a few hundred dollars and a bag of clothes, deportees must build a new life from nothing.
The newspaper headlines are a constant reminder that many reoffend, often violently. But not all. What can we learn from those who made it through and what needs to change to lessen the negative impacts of the Australian 501 policy.
This story is told by the 501s themselves.
Produced for Television New Zealand in association with New Zealand on Air Studiocanal and Warner Bros Discovery.
